Quick Verdict
Zapier got expensive and I got bitter about it, so I tried everything else. Make, n8n, and Pipedream are the ones worth your time — the rest I mostly mention so you can skip them. If you want the short version: n8n if you’re technical, Make if you’re not, and Zapier only if someone else is paying.
n8n ***** (5/5) — best overall if you can self-host Make **** (4/5) — best visual builder Pipedream **** (4/5) — best for developers who live in code IFTTT ** (2/5) — fine for smart home stuff, useless for real work Zapier ** (2/5) — works, just costs too much
The breaking point was a $127 invoice for the month of February. I run a two-person operation. I have maybe nine active Zaps. Nine. And Zapier charged me $127 because I’d crossed some task threshold I didn’t even know existed, and the "task" thing is the whole scam — every little trigger firing counts as a task, so a moderately busy automation just bleeds money while you sleep. I stared at that invoice at 11pm on a Tuesday and thought, why am I paying a subscription for something that fires a webhook and moves a row in a spreadsheet.
So I spent a weekend migrating. Here’s what I found, warts and all.
n8n
The thing I liked most about n8n is that you can just… run it yourself. I threw it on a $6 Hetzner box and it’s been humming along for four months. It’s node-based like Zapier but the execution model is way more transparent — you can see the actual JSON going between steps, which matters enormously when something breaks and you’re trying to figure out why. It ships with 400+ integrations, and if one doesn’t exist you can write a tiny bit of JavaScript or hit a raw HTTP node. I rebuilt my whole Zapier setup in about two days, and the runaway-cost anxiety is just gone, because my server costs six bucks whether I run nine workflows or nine hundred.
What I didn’t like: the learning curve is real, and the self-hosted version means you’re now the sysadmin. I’ve already had one update break an integration and had to roll back at like 12:40am. Also the UI is dense — it’s not pretty, it’s functional, and there’s a difference. If you don’t know what a webhook or a Docker container is, don’t start here. You’ll cry.
Make
Make is what I’d point most people to who want Zapier without the Zapier invoice. The visual scenario builder is genuinely nice — you see the whole flow laid out on a canvas, branches and all, which is closer to how you actually think about automation. It’s much cheaper than Zapier at comparable volume (their pricing is per-operation but the tiers go way further), and the free tier gives you a thousand operations a month to figure out if you like it.
The annoying part is the mental model. Make counts "operations," and figuring out how many operations your scenario burns is a puzzle you solve slowly and painfully. I built one flow I thought would cost basically nothing and it ate 40 operations per run because of how the iterator behaved. I also, in my first week, accidentally built a scenario that triggered itself in a loop and sent the same Slack message 300 times before I killed it. My teammate still brings that up. So. Watch your triggers.
Pipedream
If you can read code, Pipedream is kind of a joy. It’s basically "write a Node.js function, but we handle the auth and the triggers and the scheduling for you." Every step is just JavaScript, and you get the actual npm ecosystem, so instead of hoping there’s a pre-built integration you get a code editor and full control. The free tier is generous — you get a decent number of invocations per day, which for low-volume personal stuff is genuinely enough.
What I didn’t like is that it’s code-first to a fault. There’s no visual canvas that makes sense to a non-developer, so it’s a solo tool for me, not something the whole team can poke at. The debugging experience is decent but not great — errors in a step aren’t always obvious about which line blew up. And it really wants you to live in their ecosystem; the more you lean on it the more you’re locked in.
IFTTT (the free option)
Ok so IFTTT is free and I should probably mention it because it technically does automation. But I’m going to be honest: it’s a toy. It’s great for "when I get home, turn on the porch light" and "save my Instagram photos to Dropbox" — that kind of thing. The moment you want multi-step logic with branching and error handling, it falls apart. The free tier caps you at two (2) applets, which is basically a demo.
What you lose by not paying: mostly you lose the ability to do anything real. The paid tier is $2.50ish a month and it’s still not a Zapier replacement for business workflows. Use it for your smart home and your "email me when the ISS flies over" thing. Don’t route your invoices through it.
If you’re rich, just buy Zapier
I’m not going to pretend Zapier is bad at the actual job. It has the most integrations (thousands), the best docs, and it just works. If your company is footing the bill and you don’t want to think about servers or operations math, Zapier premium is genuinely the lowest-friction option and there’s a reason it’s the default. I just refuse to pay for it with my own money. There’s a difference between "best product" and "best product for the price," and Zapier lost the second one for me the second that invoice hit.
What I’m using now
n8n on my own server. It’s not pretty and I’ve become my own IT department, but I haven’t thought about a "task limit" in months and that’s worth more to me than the polish.
Pros & Cons
n8n
- Self-host for basically free, no per-task anxiety

- You’re the sysadmin now, updates can break things
- UI is dense and unfriendly to beginners
Make
- Cheaper than Zapier, nice visual canvas
- Free tier lets you actually test it out
- Operation counting is a confusing puzzle
- Easy to build a runaway loop by accident
Pipedream
- Full Node.js and npm, total control
- Generous free tier for low volume
- Code-only, not team friendly
- Debugging isn’t always obvious
IFTTT
- Free and dead simple for home/social stuff
- Two applets on free tier is a joke
- No real multi-step branching
Zapier
- The most integrations by a mile, just works
- Pricing will quietly eat your budget
- Task-based billing punishes success

FAQ
Q: Is n8n free to use? A: Free if you self-host it on your own server (you pay for the server, not n8n). The cloud version costs money. Either way, no per-task billing.
Q: Which alternative is best for a non-technical person? A: Make. The visual canvas makes sense and it’s way cheaper than Zapier. Avoid n8n and Pipedream unless you’re comfortable with servers or code.
Q: Can I migrate my Zapier automations somewhere else? A: Yes, but it’s manual — you rebuild each workflow by hand. Budget a weekend. I did nine in two days on n8n.
Q: Is Zapier still worth it? A: If someone else pays the bill and you want zero setup hassle, sure. If it’s your own money, Make or n8n will save you real cash.
