Quick Verdict
Most "best VPN" lists are written by people who’ve never had their hotel WiFi drop mid-client-call. I have. Twice. Here’s what actually holds up when you’re working from a Airbnb with suspicious router firmware.
NordVPN ***** (5/5) — the one I keep paying for Surfshark ***** (4.5/5) — best for the "five devices, one subscription" chaos Proton VPN **** (4/5) — privacy nerds, this is your lane Mullvad **** (4/5) — no accounts, no email, no thanks ExpressVPN *** (3/5) — great product, silly price Windscribe *** (3/5) — the free tier is a trap, the paid tier is fine Private Internet Access ** (2.5/5) — owned by a company I don’t love
Last October I was on a Zoom call with a client in Berlin, sitting in a rental in Lisbon, and my connection just… died. Not the WiFi — that was fine. My VPN had throttled itself into a coma because I’d left it on "auto-connect to fastest server" and it had decided the fastest server was in fucking Latvia. I missed 90 seconds of the call, said "sorry, tech issues," and spent the next hour googling "VPN remote work 2026" like a chump.
I’ve been using VPNs for about six years now, first because I was paranoid, then because I actually needed one, and now because I’ve tried enough of them to have opinions. Here’s the honest list.
NordVPN
The one I actually pay for. $12.99/mo if you don’t commit, way less if you do the two-year thing which I always do and then regret because who knows what I’ll be doing in 2028.
The thing I like: it just works. Meshnet is genuinely useful for accessing my home server, and the kill switch has saved my ass on sketchy cafe WiFi more times than I can count. The thing I hate: the app is a cluttered mess. There are like nine tabs now. I don’t need a "threat protection" dashboard, I need to connect to a server in Frankfurt. Also they keep emailing me about "exclusive deals" like I’m a guy who wants a VPN newsletter.
Surfshark
If you have a phone, a laptop, a tablet, and a partner who also needs one, Surfshark is the move. Unlimited devices. I think it’s like $2.49/mo on the long plan? Something absurd. The downside is the speed isn’t quite Nord-fast, and the customer support once told me to "try restarting my router" for a problem that was very clearly their app crashing. But for the price, whatever.
Proton VPN
I use the free tier on my phone for quick stuff. The paid tier is solid — Swiss-based, real no-logs, the whole thing. My gripe is that the free tier is basically a demo now (three countries, slow speeds), and the paid tier is more expensive than Nord for less server variety. It’s the right answer if you’re a privacy absolutist. It’s the wrong answer if you just want to watch Netflix UK.
Mullvad
You pay €5/mo, they give you a random account number, no email required. That’s it. That’s the whole pitch, and honestly it’s refreshing. Speed is good, servers are fine, the app is minimal in a good way.
The problem: no streaming unblocking. Like, at all. I tried to watch BBC iPlayer on a work trip and got the "this content is not available in your region" screen six times in a row. If you need Netflix, look elsewhere.
ExpressVPN
Great product. $12.95/mo, which is cute, and honestly you’re mostly paying for the logo and the podcast ads. The speed is excellent, the apps are polished, the Lightway protocol is legit.
But every time I’ve used it I’ve felt like I was paying a premium for… being advertised to. Their marketing budget is enormous and you can feel it in the price. I switched to Nord and never looked back.
Windscribe
Free tier gives you 10GB/month, which is generous until you forget to check and suddenly you’re on a call and the VPN cuts out because you hit the cap. The paid tier is $9/mo and it’s fine. Honestly the worst part is how boringly reliable it is — I’ve never had a dramatic failure, which is what I want from a VPN but makes for a boring review.
Private Internet Access
It works. It’s cheap. It’s owned by Kape Technologies, which has a history of buying up VPN brands and is… controversial. If you care about ownership (and you should), skip it. If you don’t care and just want $2/mo VPN that doesn’t break, fine, go ahead.
Brief tangent: I ordered a flat white yesterday and the barista asked if I wanted "oat or regular." I said regular. She looked at me like I’d kicked her dog. Remote work has changed coffee culture in ways I’m not prepared to process. Anyway.

FAQ
Q: Is a VPN actually necessary for remote work? A: If you’re on public WiFi or accessing company resources from a coffee shop — yes, absolutely. If you’re at home on your own router, it’s more about privacy than security.
Q: Which VPN is best for streaming while traveling? A: NordVPN or ExpressVPN. Mullvad won’t work for streaming at all, and Proton is hit-or-miss depending on the service.
Q: Do I need a VPN if my company already has one? A: Probably not for work stuff. But a personal VPN is still useful for your own browsing on hotel WiFi.
Q: What’s the cheapest option that doesn’t suck? A: Surfshark on a two-year plan. It’s genuinely good and absurdly cheap.
I still use NordVPN. The app annoys me, the emails annoy me, but it’s the one that’s never failed me on a client call. And after the Latvia incident, that’s the only thing I actually care about.
