Quick Verdict
Most social schedulers are glorified calendar apps that charge you $30/mo to press "post" at 9am. The good ones actually save time; the bad ones cost you a Saturday afternoon fixing a queue that broke because Twitter renamed itself again. Here’s what’s worth your money and what’s just a pretty dashboard.
Buffer ***½ (3.5/5) — cheapest that actually works Hootsuite ** (2/5) — the legacy tax Later *** (3/5) — pretty, Instagram-first Metricool **** (4/5) — the spreadsheet nerd’s pick Publer ***½ (3.5/5) — the budget workhorse Sprout Social **½ (2.5/5) — enterprise bloat SocialBee *** (3/5) — the recycling trick
Last November I scheduled two weeks of posts across four client accounts, felt smug about it, closed my laptop, and went to get coffee. Oat milk latte, extra shot, the kind that costs $6.50 and makes me question my life choices. Came back to find I’d accidentally queued the same "Happy Monday!" graphic to a client’s LinkedIn fourteen times. Fourteen. The scheduler had duplicated the queue because I’d clicked "save" twice and the tool — which shall remain nameless but rhymes with Schmootsuite — just… let it happen. No warning. No "hey idiot, you posted this already." Just fourteen identical Monday posts stacked like a sad little tower.
That was the day I started actually testing these things instead of trusting the marketing pages.
Buffer
The one I keep coming back to. Buffer is boring in the best way — it does one thing (queue posts) and doesn’t try to sell you a "social listening suite" you’ll never open. The free plan covers three channels, which is enough for a solo freelancer who’s not pretending to be an agency.
What I hate: the analytics are basically decorative. You get a graph. It tells you nothing useful. Also the AI assistant suggests captions that sound like they were written by a HR department. "Excited to share this update!" No. Stop.
Hootsuite
Everyone recommends Hootsuite because everyone recommended Hootsuite in 2016 and nobody’s bothered to update the list. It’s fine. It’s also $99/mo for the tier that doesn’t make you want to cry, which is genuinely absurd when Buffer does 80% of it for a third of the price.
I spent a whole afternoon in their support chat once trying to figure out why a scheduled Instagram carousel kept posting as a single blurry image. The rep was nice. The answer was "known issue." Cool. Known issue that cost me a client’s launch post.
Later
Genuinely good if Instagram is your whole personality. The visual planner is nice — drag-and-drop grid preview, see how the feed will look before you commit. If you run a bakery or a boutique or anything aesthetic, this is your tool.
Downside: it’s weirdly bad at anything that isn’t visual. Text posts to LinkedIn feel like an afterthought. And the pricing jumps from $25 to $45 the second you want a second user, which — okay, fine, but it stings.
Metricool
My current favorite and nobody talks about it enough. Free plan is legitimately generous, the analytics actually tell you something (best times to post, engagement by format, competitor tracking that isn’t garbage), and it handles like eight platforms without complaining.
The worst part is the interface. It looks like it was designed by an accountant who loves spreadsheets. Functional. Not pretty. You’ll spend the first hour clicking around going "where’s the… oh. There it is. Weird place for it." But it works, and it’s cheap, and I’ll take ugly-and-works over pretty-and-broken every time.
Publer
Budget option that punches above its weight. $12/mo for the pro tier, handles the basics, has a decent AI caption helper that doesn’t sound completely robotic. Good for people who are just starting out and don’t want to commit to a $50/mo subscription before they’ve made their first dollar.
But — and this is a real but — the mobile app is genuinely bad. Like, "why did this button move and also where did my draft go" bad. I lost a fully written thread to a crash in March and I’m still slightly bitter about it.
Sprout Social
Okay so Sprout costs $249/mo. Two hundred and forty-nine dollars. Per month. I’m sure it’s great for enterprise teams with a dedicated social manager and a real budget. For anyone reading a blog post called "best tools for automating social media posting," it’s overkill. It’s a CRM that happens to schedule posts. If your company already pays for it, great, use it. If you’re paying out of pocket, close this tab.
Brief tangent: I once sat through a 45-minute Zoom demo of Sprout where the sales rep’s dog barked eleven times and he never acknowledged it. Eleven. I counted. Anyway, the tool’s fine.
SocialBee
The recycling feature is genuinely clever — you dump 50 evergreen posts in, it rotates them forever so your feed doesn’t go dead when you’re busy. If you’re running a small business account and can’t post daily, this is the move.
The catch: $29/mo starting price and the AI writer is mid. It’ll give you "5 tips for better sleep" energy when you wanted something with a personality.
Pricing at a Glance

FAQ
Q: Is Buffer really free? A: Yes, for three channels. It’s limited but functional. Most freelancers can get by on it.
Q: Which tool is best for Instagram specifically? A: Later. The visual grid planner alone is worth it if IG is your main platform.
Q: Do I need Hootsuite or Sprout if I’m solo? A: No. You’re paying for team features and reporting you’ll never open. Skip them.
Q: What’s the cheapest option that doesn’t suck? A: Publer at $12/mo, or Metricool’s free tier if you can live with the ugly interface.
I use Metricool for client work and Buffer for my own stuff. That’s it. That’s the whole setup.
