Quick Verdict
Most deliverability tools are spam-adjacent garbage that charge you $99/mo to tell you your SPF record is broken. The good ones — and there are maybe four — actually fix shit before your domain gets nuked. I’ve spent the last three years cycling through these things across client accounts, and honestly, two of them saved my ass while the rest just sent scary emails at 2am.
Tool ratings:
- Validity ****½ (4.5/5) — the actual grown-up in the room
- GlockApps **** (4/5) — best inbox placement testing
- Mailtrap **** (4/5) — dev-friendly, honest pricing
- ZeroBounce ***½ (3.5/5) — great validation, weird upsells
- Warmy *** (3/5) — does one thing, does it fine
- MailReach *** (3/5) — pricey for what it is
- SendForensics **½ (2.5/5) — the UI made me angry
The Story
Back in February I watched a client’s domain get blackholed. Not hit by a spam filter — erased. Everything went to the promotions tab first, then Gmail’s spam folder, then nothing. Total silence. I’d been sending a weekly newsletter for fourteen months with zero issues, then my bounce rate jumped from 0.4% to 11% in five days because someone (me) had accidentally imported a scraped list from a coworker’s "contact spreadsheet."
That was a $4,000 retainer, gone. And I found out about it because the client texted me "hey why is everyone unsubscribing" at 7am on a Tuesday.
Anyway — deliverability tools exist because email is held together with duct tape and Google’s mood swings. Here’s what I actually use now, ranked by "would I pay for this out of pocket."
Validity (formerly Return Path)
The 400-pound gorilla. When you need to know why your emails are landing in spam and not just that they are, Validity is what enterprise teams use. Their sender reputation data is genuinely the deepest I’ve seen — they track over 5 billion emails daily across major ISPs. And the cost reflects that.
But I’ll be honest — the demo I sat through last September had a sales guy say "leveraging synergies" twice in four minutes, and the dashboard looks like it was designed in 2011 by a committee who really loved navy blue. It works. It’s just ugly and expensive. Starting around $500/mo once you talk to sales, which — cute.
GlockApps
My go-to for inbox placement testing. You send a test email to a seed list across Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and about 30 smaller providers, and they show you exactly where it landed. Kind of like a weather map but for spam filters.
I check it every time I change a DNS record, because one wrong DKIM character will destroy your life and you won’t know for a week. The seed lists are refreshed constantly, which matters — some competitors use addresses that are 6 months cold and the results become garbage.
What I hated: the free tier is basically a teaser, and the $59/mo plan limits you to 50 tests. My colleague Sarah ran out mid-audit on a Black Friday weekend and had to email support at 11pm. They responded in 20 minutes, so, credit where due.
Mailtrap
If you’re a developer or work with one, Mailtrap is the tool that doesn’t make you want to scream. Their email testing sandbox is the standard for staging environments, and the deliverability side (Mailtrap Email Delivery) is solid. Their pricing is transparent — $15/mo for the starter tier, no "call us for a quote" nonsense.
The thing I liked most: it tells you which specific thing is wrong. Not "your authentication failed" but "your DKIM signature is missing the s= tag for selector google20230601." That specificity saved me two hours one Friday.
Downside — the analytics are shallow compared to Validity. Good for diagnostics, less good for long-term reputation tracking. Also the docs have a typo on the "Getting Started" page that’s been there for eight months. Petty? Yes. But it’s the first thing you see.
ZeroBounce
The list validation tool that everyone uses and nobody loves. It catches disposable emails, abuse addresses, and "info@yourdomain.co" typos before you send anything. Accuracy is genuinely around 99% in my testing, which is hard to argue with.
They will upsell you hard though. Buy a validation package and you get six emails in a week about "AI scoring" and "inbox placement add-ons" and "warmup services." I unsubscribed three times before it stuck. The actual product is fine — the marketing team needs a hobby.
Warmy
Does one thing: warms up a new sending domain by gradually increasing volume and simulating real human behavior. If you’re spinning up a new ESP or a cold email domain, this matters. A lot. I burned two domains in 2024 by skipping warmup because I was in a hurry.
Warmy’s interface is bare-bones and the reporting is basically "it worked" or "it didn’t." No graphs, no insights. It’s also $39/mo, which feels steep for something you use for a few weeks and then ignore. But it works, and honestly, the worst part is how boringly reliable it is.
MailReach
Cold email warmup with a nicer UI than Warmy. More network partners, more reporting, more features. Also more expensive — $59/mo for the basic plan, $99 for the "Pro" tier that doesn’t add anything you’ll notice unless you’re a heavy sender.
I switched from MailReach to Warmy because the pricing annoyed me, then switched back after Warmy couldn’t handle a domain that was on three shared IPs. So. There’s that.
SendForensics
Their core spam filter testing is genuinely good. But the UI looks like a Windows 98 screensaver had a baby with a Bloomberg terminal, and the onboarding flow tried to make me watch a 12-minute video before I could run a single test. Twelve minutes. I closed the tab, made a coffee (oat milk flat white, two shots, extra foam — fight me), and came back to it twenty minutes later with barely contained rage.
It’s fine. Not great. Not terrible. Just… fine.

FAQ
Q: Is GlockApps free to use? A: Barely. You get a tiny seed list and like 5 tests. It’s a demo, not a free tier. Budget $59 if you’re serious.
Q: Which tool is best for a small business sending under 10K emails/month? A: Mailtrap. Transparent pricing, good diagnostics, and you won’t be negotiating with a sales team that uses the word "synergy."
Q: Do I need both a warmup tool and a validation tool? A: Yes. They solve completely different problems. Validation cleans your list; warmup builds your sender reputation. Skipping either is like brushing your teeth and not flossing. (I floss like twice a week, so, take that advice how you want.)
Q: What’s the cheapest way to avoid spam folders? A: Authenticate SPF, DKIM, and DMARC properly, clean your list monthly, and stop buying scraped lists. That’s free. Tools just tell you when you’ve fucked up.
I still run GlockApps on every client account and Mailtrap on anything with a dev team. ZeroBounce gets pulled out twice a year when someone hands me a "great list" from a conference. And Validity — I’ll use it when someone else is paying, which is basically the entire story of enterprise software.
