Quick Verdict
Most "best data viz tool" lists are written by people who’ve never had to explain a funnel chart to a VP at 8am. I have. Twice this month. If you want the short version: Tableau if someone else pays, Looker Studio if you’re broke, Flourish if you need it to look pretty fast. Everything else is a tradeoff.
- Tableau **** (4/5) — powerful, expensive, will humble you
- Looker Studio **** (4/5) — free, ugly, dependable
- Flourish ***** (4.5/5) — best for scrollable storytelling
- Power BI *** (3/5) — great if you live in Excel, painful otherwise
- Datawrapper ***** (4.5/5) — best for quick charts you embed
- Observable *** (3/5) — best for people who actually code
The morning I had to rebuild the same dashboard three times
Last February I sent a client a "final" dashboard. Bold move, calling anything final. The next morning she forwarded it back with a note that said, in full, "the bars are the wrong color, can you fix." That was it. No context. I spent 40 minutes changing a hex code because I’d hardcoded it in eleven places like an idiot.
That week I tried basically every viz tool with a free tier. Here’s what stuck.
Tableau
The big one. If you’ve been in marketing for more than a year, someone has made you sit through a Tableau demo. It’s genuinely powerful — the calculation engine will do things Excel physically cannot, and the dashboards look legit when you’re presenting to people who sign checks.
What I hate: the licensing. Tableau wants roughly $75/user/month for the Creator seat, and the moment your team grows you’re having an awkward budget conversation with finance about why the "chart software" costs more than the CRM. Also, the learning curve is real. I watched a 90-minute tutorial on LOD expressions and came out the other side a slightly worse person.
Looker Studio
Free. Connected to everything Google. And it looks like a spreadsheet had a baby with a PowerPoint from 2014.
Honestly? That’s fine. Looker Studio (formerly Data Studio) is the tool I keep coming back to because it just works and it’s free and the client can open it without a login headache. The connectors to GA4 and Search Console save me hours. The downside is you have almost no control over typography, so every report has that unmistakable "made in Looker" vibe. You can hack around it with blank canvases and image overlays and eventually you’ll ask yourself what you’re doing with your life.
Looker Studio: $0. Tableau: $75. Which one do I open every Monday? The free one. Make of that what you will.
Flourish
This is the one I actually get excited about. Flourish is built for stories, not dashboards — scrollable charts, animated bar races, that kind of thing. I made a "how our ad spend moved over 12 months" piece in it and a client asked if we’d hired a designer. No. I clicked three buttons.
The catch: Flourish is a publishing tool, not an analysis tool. You export your data from somewhere else, then make it pretty here. Their free tier watermarks everything with the Flourish logo, and I once exported a chart with the watermark still on it to a client deck. Nobody said anything. I still think about it.
Power BI
If your company runs on Microsoft, this is probably already installed and you have no choice. Fine. It integrates with Excel in a way that feels almost unfair, and the DAX language is powerful once it clicks.
Two things I can’t stand: the desktop app is Windows-only, so my Mac-using clients are just… out. And the naming conventions are unhinged. "Measures" and "calculated columns" and "quick measures" — pick a lane.
Datawrapper
My quiet favorite. Datawrapper makes one job stupidly easy: paste data, get a clean chart, embed it. No account needed for the basic stuff. I’ve made probably 200 charts in it and never once fought the interface.
The bad part is customization. If you want a chart that looks like your brand and not Datawrapper’s house style, you’ll hit walls fast. It’s also not built for live-updating dashboards — it’s for one-off charts you publish. That’s a feature and a limitation depending on the day.
Observable
Observable is where you go when you know JavaScript and want to build something bespoke. The notebooks are genuinely fun if you’re into that, and the community puts out wild stuff.
For 90% of marketers? Overkill. I opened it, felt the familiar dread of "am I about to spend my weekend learning D3," and closed the tab. Also — quick tangent — I ordered a cortado at a coffee shop last week and the barista looked at me like I’d asked for a blood sample. Anyway. Observable is great, just not for us normal people.
Google Sheets (yes, seriously)
Not a "viz tool" but I’m including it because it’s what everyone actually uses. The chart editor is limited and the colors are cursed, but it’s free, collaborative, and nobody has to learn anything. Sometimes the right answer is the boring one.

FAQ
Q: Is Looker Studio actually free? A: Yes. Completely. No "free for 14 days" nonsense. Google makes money elsewhere.
Q: Which tool is best for a marketing team with no data analyst? A: Datawrapper for one-off charts, Looker Studio for ongoing dashboards. Avoid Tableau unless you have someone who genuinely enjoys it.
Q: Can I use these tools without knowing SQL? A: Yes for Looker Studio, Datawrapper, Flourish, and Google Sheets. Tableau and Power BI will let you point-and-click but you’ll hit a ceiling fast without some data skills.
Q: What’s the best free option? A: Looker Studio if you need dashboards, Datawrapper if you need charts. Both free, both good enough.
These days I open Looker Studio every morning, Datawrapper when something needs to look nice, and Tableau exactly twice a year when a client insists. The rest sit in a bookmarks folder I keep meaning to clean out.
