Quick Verdict
Most "best VPN for teams" lists are padded garbage written by people who’ve never actually onboarded a team of twelve across four time zones. I have. Twice. Here’s what actually worked and what made me want to throw my laptop into a river.
NordLayer **** (4/5) — best all-rounder for actual teams Tailscale ***** (4.5/5) — best if your team is even slightly technical Perimeter 81 *** (3/5) — fine, expensive, very corporate Mullvad *** (3/5) — great privacy, zero team features Proton VPN **** (4/5) — best free tier, weakest admin panel Cloudflare WARP ** (2.5/5) — not really a VPN, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise OpenVPN Access Server ** (2/5) — technically works, spiritually broken
Last October I spent four hours on a Zoom call trying to explain to a designer in Lisbon why her Figma files wouldn’t sync. Four hours. Her VPN was routing her traffic through a server in Newark because our admin (me) had set up the routing rules wrong at 11pm the night before while eating cold pizza. That’s the moment I decided to actually research this instead of just picking whatever had the nicest homepage.
The thing nobody tells you about "remote team VPNs" is that half the products marketed as such are just consumer VPNs with an admin dashboard bolted on. You’re paying triple for a feature that barely works. The other half are zero-trust network access tools that technically aren’t VPNs at all but solve the same problem better. The marketing has completely lost the plot.
NordLayer
This is what I landed on for my last agency job, mostly because it was the only one my non-technical account manager could figure out without a support ticket. The dashboard is genuinely clean. You add team members, assign them to gateways, done. Took me about 40 minutes to set up 22 people.
The pricing though. It’s per-seat and the per-seat cost stings once you pass 10 people. I want to say we paid around $9/user/month on the annual plan? Honestly I’ve blocked it out. Also — and this drove me insane — their "dedicated IP" add-on is billed separately and the sales rep didn’t mention it during the demo. Got a surprise invoice. Cool.
Tailscale
Okay so technically Tailscale is a mesh VPN built on WireGuard, not a traditional VPN, and every Tailscale fanboy will correct you if you call it a VPN. Fine. Whatever. It’s the best thing on this list and it costs nothing for teams under 3 users (the free tier is generous) and then something like $6/user/month after that.
Setup is genuinely magical. You install it, you log in with Google, your devices just… see each other. I set up a tailnet connecting my laptop, my cofounder’s laptop, a DigitalOcean droplet, and a Raspberry Pi in my closet in about 12 minutes. The ACL system is powerful but the docs assume you know what a "tag" is in a networking context, which I did not, so I spent an evening on YouTube.
Downside: if your team includes anyone who’s ever asked "what’s a terminal," they will be confused by the admin console. It’s not pretty. It’s not friendly. It works flawlessly though.
Perimeter 81
We trialed this before NordLayer. It’s fine. It’s very enterprise-coded — lots of compliance badges on the homepage, a sales team that wants to get on a call before they’ll even tell you the price. The product itself works. The zero-trust stuff is legit.
But $8-12/user/month with a minimum seat count and annual commitment? For a 6-person team that’s real money for features we didn’t need. Also their macOS client crashed on my M1 MacBook three times in one week. Support blamed macOS. I blamed support. We parted ways.
Mullvad
I love Mullvad. Genuinely. They take cash in the mail. They don’t ask for your email. €5/month flat, no per-seat nonsense. If you’re a solo dev who wants to browse privately, this is your tool.
For remote teams? There’s no admin panel. No user management. No way to see who’s connected. You’d have to have every team member sign up individually and Venmo you. Which… I mean, I’ve done weirder things. But it’s not a team product and they’d be the first to tell you that.
Proton VPN
The free tier is genuinely usable, which is rare. The paid tier gets you more servers and streaming access and the whole thing is Swiss and privacy-respecting, which matters if your team handles anything sensitive.
The admin story is weak though. Proton’s "business" plan exists but the seat management feels bolted on compared to NordLayer. You can’t easily segment teams or set per-user policies. If you have 8 people and they all just need to look like they’re in the same country, sure. If you need actual network segmentation, look elsewhere.
Cloudflare WARP
Every few months someone on Twitter declares WARP is a free VPN and everyone should use it for their team. It isn’t. WARP is a DNS resolver and traffic accelerator that sometimes feels VPN-adjacent. It does not give you a team admin panel. It does not let you route specific traffic through specific servers. It is not what you’re looking for. Stop.
(That said, I do use WARP+ on my phone and it’s fine for what it is.)
OpenVPN Access Server
If you know, you know. If you don’t — it’s a self-hosted VPN server you can spin up on any VPS for basically free. I ran this for a startup in 2022. It worked. Sort of. Every macOS update broke the client. Every new team member needed a 30-minute onboarding call. I once spent a Saturday morning regenerating certificates because I’d set the expiry too short. Never again. The only reason it’s on this list is because someone will inevitably suggest it in the comments.

FAQ
Q: Is Tailscale actually a VPN? A: Technically it’s a mesh VPN built on WireGuard. For your team’s purposes, it does everything a VPN does and better. Don’t get hung up on the label.
Q: Which VPN is best for a remote team of 5-10 people? A: Tailscale if anyone on your team can follow a docs page. NordLayer if nobody can.
Q: Do I need a business VPN or can we all just use Mullvad? A: You can all use Mullvad individually, but you’ll have zero admin visibility and no way to enforce policy. Fine for a 2-person startup, bad for anything bigger.
Q: Is Cloudflare WARP a VPN? A: No, and Cloudflare will tell you that if you read their docs. It’s a DNS resolver with some routing tricks. Stop putting it on VPN lists (including mine, which I’m now realizing I did anyway).
I use Tailscale for my current team of four and NordLayer for the agency client I still consult for, because their IT guy insists on something with a "real" support contract. Both work. Neither is perfect. If you’re starting from zero today, install Tailscale, connect two laptops, and see how long it takes you to go "oh, that’s it?"
